If you want to use .htaccess protected sites ...
... you have to set the following conf/config.xml option:
<allowHTTPAuthentication>false</allowHTTPAuthentication>
Otherwise your site won't work.
You need that, because the blog plugin tries to do HTTP Authentication by itself to allow RSS aggregator to see password protected posts. With the above setting, this is not possible anymore, but the whole site will be password protected anyway, therefore this is something we can live for the time being
The other option is to have the same username/password combo for .htaccess based protection and the users within Flux CMS. Then it should work, as well.
We will maybe find a better solution some day, but for now, this has to do it :)

*It occurs to me: sites should be Identity enabled ... silly that we should have to enter ID data repeatedly.*
Does this manifest with free Flux access? I'm thinking free users are only being exposed to a subset of the system's functionality.

*Ok ... now for sure: like any good blog, this should have a check-box to allow "Remember my information". I'm having to fill that all in twice in 5 minutes. Thought I appreciate your speedy reply (wondering if this man does not sleep! /grin/).*
K ... which leads me to a question I was going to PM you: is it valid to require potential users to go through an entire install procedure to give the full system a run through? "Granularity" comes to mind ... and "sandbox" ... almost as though we must fork the version to give it a good workout (which, really, is what beta should be, yes?).
cheers
p.s. what I'm thinking is that your interface may be very fine for individuals who are a) proficient and/or b) familiar with it. So, have a simpler version available with the present interface as "Advanced".

yeah, the "remember me" is missing right now.
The intention of Freeflux.net is not to give you the possibilities to test all possible features of Flux CMS, but nevertheless almost all. The more advanced stuff needs access to the file system and some configure options, we can't ofcourse give that to all. If you want to test everything, you have to install it by yourself on your server.
And about the "simple interface". How do you imagine that? Just the blogging part?

*I edited my FreeFlux homepage ... and snooped the Admin page /grin/*
I'll be installing gravatar soon, soo ...
Ahh, simple ... to mis-quote an old essayist (Lord Chesterfield?) "I apologize for having written so much; if I had more time my note would have been shorter."
A simple interface that is at once intuitive and elegant ... yes ... perhaps FreeFlux deserves that sort of attention.
In short: you know how features are tucked away in the Firefox O)ptions menus? There was a terrible amount of squabbling on IRC and on NG about that ... lots of heat, and a fair amount of light ... not easy. So what came to mind was, well, like the way items such as /themes/standard/plugins/metasearch/result2html.xsl are hidden deep in the left-hand panel tree ... to have things well hidden from the neophyte but still accessible to the advanced ... almost like applying a skin.
*cough* Perhaps you'll allow me to login to the developers wiki at some point?
*grin*
